Heidegger and the notion of Gestell in the critique of technology
Abstract
The German thinker Martin Heidegger offers a unique interpretation of modern technique and its development into technological devices. It stands on the notion of Gestell, an ordinary word in German language, revisited by Heidegger. To frame that interpretation accordingly, a previous understanding of Heidegger’s work is required. We will aim to provide that through a hermeneutic and phenomenological path, trying to focus on the gains brought by Gestell to any thinking that inquires about the meaning and foundation of technology in the present age.
